Nightwish Live @ The Forum, Melbourne

It is always cool shooting at Melbourne’s Forum. It is the very venue I shot my first (professional) gig at in 2008 and it was great getting stuck back into it after a few weeks of not even looking at the camera.

Unfortunately however, as I was getting ready for the gig, the world learnt of the passing of Rock legend David Bowie. That news certainly put a dampener on the evening and my motivation to photograph a Rock show was know well and truly thrown out the window.

However, there was work to be done.

Opening proceedings tonight for Nightwish were Tasmanian Rockers Taberah. I haven’t had a chance to see, let alone photograph these guys so it was good to finally see them tonight performing in front of a sold-out Melbourne Forum crowd.

I thought they were great. Tons of spunk and attitude and for the most part, the audience really enjoyed their Iron Maiden influenced good-time sound.

Although I am well and truly familiar with Nightwish, they aren’t a band I have in my music library. For the most part, I can’t stand that Symphonic Metal malarkey but I sure as hell can appreciate the fact that Nightwish are a very popular band and they do that genre of Metal perfectly.

Tonight was the second time I have photographed them. The first was in 2013(?) Both shows were sold out and tonight’s crowd was busting with anticipation long before the band took to the stage.

There were smiles a-plenty when the band kicked off their set both onstage and wishing the plethora of fans present.

Nightwish are an experienced lot. It was fun photographing them and watching them take their adoring fans on an adventure of far away places where kings and queens dwell and fairy tales have a slick Symphonic Metal beat.

Good to be back in the photopit!

Enjoy the pics!
