Sepultura, Death Angel, Harlott Live, @ 170 Russell, Melbourne

It’s pretty much familiar territory when one walks into the 170 Russell venue with three bands on a bill I have seen and shot before. Third time with Death Angel, second time with Sepultura and second with local boys Harlott.

But there was nothing familiar or standard or common about tonight! (Apart from an incredibly overcrowded photo-pit. Twelve photographers? Really?)

Harlott have spent quite a bit of time overseas of late. Treading the boards of Europe and beyond, they left these shores as a damn fine band and have now come home with an edge and an attitude that is brimming with confidence and a feeling of taking things up a notch or two. They held their own against seasoned veterans such as Death Angel and Sepultura and put forth a fantastic set of local born and bred Thrash Metal.

Death Angel were one of the first bands I photographed back in 2009. I shot them opening for Armored Saint and has been documented on these pages herein, they blew away the headliner that night. It looked like history repeated itself again tonight. These guys are a fine oiled machine. A relentless, faultless, enthusiastic set that left most of the punters blown away tonight. They did it again. As fantastic as Sepultura were and are… I came away (again) thinking that these guys stole the show so magnificently again. The energy! The attitude! The very feel of the whole room was just brimming a raw energy that cannot be described. Fucking brilliant!

Death Angel

Sepultura are still kings! I personally dig the hell out of this line-up and witnessed them putting in a stellar, powerful set. They, along with Death Angel, have been in this caper for such a long time and it shows in their ability to still crush your skull from 10 paces. The relentless force that pours off that stage is mind-blowing. Sometimes you have to remind yourself that it is only 4 guys generating so much raw energy and power.

Fantastic night all round!
